This year the BCGE Tour du Léman à l’Aviron celebrates its 50th anniversary and our club its 150th anniversary.
In 1972, a handful of passionate enthusiasts had the idea of creating the Tour du Léman to celebrate the centenary of the Société Nautique de Genève. Competitors row around Lake Geneva in a clockwise direction, covering 160 km without any stopover or external help, in teams of four rowers and a coxswain capable of coping with the weather conditions of Lake Geneva.
This event, which was originally intended to be a one-off, became an annual event and is still run today. Teams from the United States, Australia, Russia, Hungary, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland and other European countries regularly participate.
The first edition was interrupted in the Drences due to weather conditions, the team: P.-E. Laurent, L. Magnenat, B. Hausler, R. Graf and Faigaux II from SNG having covered the longest distance won the Tour. In 1973, the first full Tour was completed and SN Monaco, rowing a skiff, won the regatta in 15h. 38 min and 27 sec.
